Chattanooga, Tenn. (Jun. 24, 2021) - Sierra Cook, a second-year science teacher at Dalewood Middle School, won a national lesson plan competition held by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
Teachers from across the country entered this competition and were challenged to create a summer lesson plan for a learning activity that students could complete at home.
“This competition wasn’t about me but about helping the students of Dalewood Middle thrive,” said Sierra Cook. “I’d also like to honor my Dalewood family because I would not have won this competition without their support.”
Cook submitted an interactive lesson plan about the greenhouse effect that allowed students to utilize everyday materials at home to conduct a simple science experiment in order to learn more about Earth’s atmosphere.
“Ms. Cook is a powerful example of Hamilton County Schools’ teachers and their commitment to all children,” said Dr. Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “It is exciting that students around the country will have the opportunity to experience the great learning taking place in our classrooms."
The lesson plan will be published on the ORISE website for teachers around the country to access and use in their classrooms.
