Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Katie Dupree, a first grade teacher at Brown Academy. Ms. Dupree was nominated for her love for students and passion for teaching.

“Katie is one of my best friends, and this is her first full year teaching right out of college,” said Kalie McMahan, one of Ms. Dupree’s colleagues. “Katie stepped up to the plate once Covid-19 hit to be a virtual teacher at Brown Academy. Her love for her kids and passion for teaching made the decision a no-brainer, and she has been working tremendously hard to help transition the learning experience for her students in these unknown times.”

In addition to being a first-year teacher, Ms. Dupree has had to adapt to online learning with her first grade class. Like many educators this year, Ms. Dupree has had to rethink how her class works in a virtual environment.

“It was tough in first grade because the kids had to learn all about technology and how to learn remotely but they are experts now and I’m so proud of them,” said Ms. Dupree. “They are hard workers and they continue to work through every issue.”

Although this year has proven to be a challenge, Ms. Dupree has had a great support system inside and outside of the classroom to keep her motivated for what lies ahead. Ms. Dupree adds, “I would not be making it through this year without my friends. They let me vent, cry, and they celebrate the small victories with me.”

Ms. Dupree has a large heart for her students and is always finding inspiration in them. “My favorite part about my job is the relationships with my students,” said Ms. Dupree. “They are constantly making me laugh and make me remember why I chose this career. I could not have hand-picked better students.”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Ms. Dupree on our team to support our students!
